I grew up in Nebraska and spend 17 (too many) years there. I've been through harsh winters. But I don't remember them at all.I've lived in tropical climates for the past 12 years and am currently in North Carolina. Winters here sit at a regular low in the mid 20s; we usually get highs into the high 40s, maybe the low 50s even. Suffice to say, I'm spoiled.I ordered this jacket to survive this winter, which is promising to be a cold one. Middle of December and it's already dipping into the 30s! Brrrr! And survive this jacket will do! The "high loft fleece" layer is relatively thin, which keeps this jacket nice and light, but it also keeps me warm. I've worn it outside walking the dog (who, at 5 AM, feels as if she must investigate every blade of grass in the neighborhood) when it was close to 0C outside (see what I did there? Tricked you! Kept you on your toes!) and I was fine.Wind does not penetrate this jacket at all. The hood is snug enough that you don't create a small wind tunnel around your head like jackets that are designed to be worn with a helmet; another benefit to the hood is that it's not designed to be removed, which always leaves gaps in the material coverage. At the wrists is a perfectly placed piece of hook-and-loop fastener which isn't quite as strong (or loud) as Velcro, but does more than an adequate job at sealing the sleeves around a pair of gloves. If you were active, you may be interested in unzipping under the arms to allow extra ventilation. My only complaint with this jacket is that the pockets only have lining on one side of the inside. You won't keep both hands warm using these pockets, only the side of your hands away from your body. On the side your palms would sit is a mesh fabric. This means that if you're cold outside and leave the pockets unzipped, be prepared for that inevitable breeze that hits just right to blow right through the jacket.I guess it could also use a chest pocket, but now I'm just being picky.
